I don't read in darkened rooms/places (it strains my eyes), so the lack of backlighting doesn't bother me. I don't want a lot of bells and whistles. The Kindle 3G was out when I bought my Touch, and a colleague was surprised I didn't go for the 'better' one (as they saw it). I'm pretty low-tech when it comes to reading. It's still my only e-reader, and I've used it since I got it in 2012. I got my Kindle (Touch, e-ink, no backlight, with clunky wifi, from 2012), because it was the best known to me (I didn't know of other brands then), and extremely convenient (Amazon ecosystem, one-click ordering, choice of books, prices etc). I check out books all the time so that’s the most important for me. Getting a library ebook to your Kindle is only available in the USA, but Kobos can get them in other countries as well because they have direct Overdrive support. Plus you generally get great support from Amazon. I too have seen several reviews on youtube of people complaining of the uneven lighting of kobo screen, including odd coloring in some cases. Kindle for my situation is certainly a much better option over kobo.

Resolutions are the same (expect for the cheapest options, which for text reading it is not much of an issue in most cases). IT can handle PDFs better and it handles comics and manga. I am reading text, not looking at artwork. Formatting options are limited, but really, how much do you need to adjust the distance between sentences? It just seems a bit too much to worry if you are 2 points or 3 points difference. Libbi is still possible but but not as easy as on the kobo, but in most countries this is not even available, so a pointless feature that just takes up more storage space. You can add the fonts that you want and not waste memory space for fonts you don't want to use. For me the epub file is not an issue as most sites do offer MOBI support, and there are several options for converting epub into MOBI/AZW3 format (online and offline). You get frequent system updates, even for most of the older devices, so support is there for years to come. It gets you to reading with little distractions. Kindle has the word list for studying words, it has voiceview and audible, it is easy to send files to it through SendToKindle apps that amazon supplies for free. The biggest point for kobos is their integration of Overdrive to borrow books, which only functions in the USA and maybe a few other countries. All kobo seems to be better at doing is accepting epub files, playing a few simple games, and offer more built-in fonts and formatting adjustments. I agree with the comments that you are not just getting a device, but a whole eco system.I find the kindle actually does a lot more because of it's audio capabilities.
